As a little girl, I simply loved to play dress up. I’d pull out my sparkly pink dress, my mom’s old heels, and my mini-tiara and pretend I was a princess in a faraway land. I ordered my servants (aka my little brother) around and waited for my prince to come. It’s probably when my penchant for acting was first born.
And again tonight, at age 26, I’ll be playing dress up. We’re hosting a costume party for our Sunday School class. I didn’t figure adults liked playing dress up.
But oh boy, they do!
So what is it about dressing up that we love? Is it simply the fun of it? The fact that it makes us feel like kids again? Or does it go deeper than that?
Could it be that we like being someone other than ourselves, albeit temporarily? Maybe sometimes, our own lives are too difficult and we want an escape. Or maybe we gain a sense of confidence in someone else’s shoes that we can’t seem to find in our own.
I don’t have the answers. All I know is I love pretending to be someone else.
Maybe I don’t need to know why.
Questions for you: Do you like dressing up in costume? If so, why? If not, why?
I'm sure it's no surprise that a fellow actress absolutely loves to dress up. There's something freeing about allowing yourself to escape into another life/world for an evening (or weekend run).
Shelby, so glad to know I'm not alone in this!! 😛
Dressing up can be fun. I remember one year I managed to get my husband to be the King of Hearts and I was his queen (it was early in our relationship, so he was more willing to dress up). It was fun!
Occasionally we go see plays, I like to get dressed up then too. Not in actual costumes, but dressed nicer than when going to church. It makes the night feel extra special. It makes me think I am stepping out of my mommy/wife/friend role and being someone more romantic, someone more mysterious…it's fun!
I know what you mean, TC. I love dressing up for the theater, etc. Makes me feel extra sophisticated! 😛
I'm dressing up today, Lindsay! Going to help with "Boo Bash" downtown in our little town. We get about 2,000 kids! Then you add in all the adults–Wow! Fun times.
Blessings to you, Lindsay!
That's great, Cheryl! It's so much fun when we get to join in the fun in order to reach out to the kids and show them a good time.
I hope you have a blast!
I attended a birthday party with a "Red Neck" theme recently. It was great! Whole families attended so it was clean fun. Everyone agreed that the Pre-planning was almost as fun as the event as they ran around thrift stores putting their "red neck" costumes together.
Sharen, that reminds me of a "hobo" party I went to once. Everyone brought one item to contribute to a stew/soup that we cooked over a fire. It was awesome! 😛
