Well, folks, I’ve done it. I vlogged.
Now mind you, this is by no means a professional vlogging job. I know my face looks kinda orange-y and I say “um” a lot, but hey, um, that’s me. And that’s what vlogging is all about, in my opinion. Me. I mean, you getting to know me. Hehe. Riiiight.
OK, I’m feeling a little goofy as I write this…but it’s Friday (well, it will be when this gets posted), so that’s OK!
In case you don’t have time to watch my somewhat scary excellent vlog, here’s the basic premise.
My question for you today is: If you could do anything career-wise that you’re not currently doing (even if it’s not logical for you to pursue it), what would it be? (So all of you wannabe ice cream taste testers, now’s the time to speak up!)

I think you're an AWESOME singer. You may be surprised to hear it, but we sang a duet today. Yup. I popped in the CD you sent me of you singing hymns and praise songs, and I sang along. OK, I made a joyful noise and had fun doing so. The best part, though, was listening to you sing. You have an amazing voice, so bright and clear. I could listen to you sing all day long.
To answer your question, if I could do something other than what I'm doing (which is living out my lifelong dream of being a writer), I would learn to play the violin. I got hooked on the classics when I wrote my debut novel. My hero and heroine play violin and/or fiddle, so I listened to different composers' works while I wrote. I needed to find some pieces to include in my story, which I did. In the process, I discovered Vivaldi's Four Seasons. Talk about love! I've listened to the piece over 1,000 times on iTunes and hundreds more times while driving. I was able to hear both Joshua Bell and Itzhak Perlman in concert at my daughter's university. Wow! I realize I haven't the time to write and learn to play violin, so I content myself with listening to others play and play and play. =)

And I agree, it would be so, so awesome to learn to play an instrument. I play piano in kindergarden. That's it. And I took one semester of guitar. Guess neither of them stuck! 😛 But I agree that violin is a beautiful instrument.

If I could do another job besides writing … hhhhm, I think I'd like to be an artist, maybe an illustrator of some sort. Of course, I have zero talent in that area. I fail at stick figures. I think it would be great fun to take an concept and create a visual with it — not using words.

And I wish I could draw or do crafts. Sadly, I did not inherit that ability from my mom (she was the craft queen). My stick figures look…well, they just aren't proportional. Their necks are always too long. Ha.
I LOVE this vlog, Lindsay! I think you did a great job! You're really easy to listen to. I loved your little "where did this hand come from?" quip. That cracked me up! And I feel like I know you better. I had no idea you were a singer/performer. That's awesome!
Now to answer your question – I'm happy to say I'm doing what I would choose. I'm living out my dream. Of course, dreams are never as fancy and glorious as we envision them. But still, I love it!
If I had to choose something else, it would be….an editor for a publishing house, maybe? I don't know. No, scratch that. A professional book reviewer. I could read all day and then write about it!
Oh, that Phantom Hand. I left it in because I thought, hey, this is for fun, right? And I don't really want to redo this 1,000 more times. I had one almost perfect and then my cat jumped up in the shot. *sigh* But I had a lot of fun and probably will return to Vlogsville sometime soon…
And I'm glad you're doing what you love. Yes, reading all day long and reviewing? Sounds like a dream!

Deep down, I'm like you with the acting. I loved Drama classes in high school and would love to be in a professional production. I wish I had a voice for musical theatre, but I don't. I can't imagine anything more fun than singing and dancing on stage. I smiled at your affinity for the oldies. My daughter is quick on the trigger… and feels pretty, oh so pretty… 🙂
Something else I'd love to do is travel writing. I suppose that's actually within my reach, or more so than the acting dream!

My answer to your question is easy and fun to write about: I would pursue more language learning and become a cracker jack interpreter. I saw a program on-line for a Master's degree in Translation and Interpretation that made me positively drool! I would tighten up my French and Spanish, get this Master's, learn more Russian, Swahili and Arabic, and then spend my life helping people communicate with each other. The very idea makes me quiver inside.
The ACTUAL plan for our life is for Chad to finish medical school and residency so we can do world-wide medical missions. That said, there will be LOTS of opportunities to interpret, just very little opportunity for the education I will need to do it well. This is a conundrum for my heart that I have to constantly turn over to the Lord. He knows best and I trust Him.
I know how hard it can be to put your husband's education before your own–I put Mike through law school before pursuing my Master's, though I was blessed enough to be able to pursue it soon after.
But don't give up hope. Like you're doing, just keep giving it to the Lord. If it's truly a desire he's placed there, he may show you a way to achieve that dream.
Yay, I love your vlog! So fun. And…I looove musicals too. I grew up watching Sound of Music, the Barbra Streisand version of Hello Dolly, My Fair Lady…pretty much every Rogers & Hammerstein one…love 'em all. And I had no idea you were an actress and singer – how fun.
If I could do anything career-wise, I'd want to be a full-time writer. I've gone through phases of wanting to be a lawyer, a theater director, a barista…oh, and a teacher, but mainly because I love the idea of having summers off. Probably not a good enough reason to teach. 😉

And to answer your question, I love musicals of all kinds. All the great Rogers & Hammerstein (I was in South Pacific my senior year of high school) and the others, like Singing in the Rain, Summerstock, Brigadoon (I just listed all Gene Kelly movies! *hearthrob*). I also love Doris Day, Fred Astair, Judy Garland (a Minnesota native!) Shirley Temple, and on and on. Did I tell you about my bridesmaids performing Seven Brides for Seven Brothers' song "June Bride" at my wedding?
